Homemade Lip Balm

October 8, 2015

I have an addiction.  I can't be without my lip balm.  I know it's a serious problem that many of you deal with as well, and believe me, I feel your pain.  But seriously, I can't even express to you how often I reach for lip balm throughout the day.  So when I found out there was a way to make my own lip balm at home for way cheaper than what I was paying for store bought versions, AND that it had only natural, good-for-you ingredients, I jumped all over it.

I found a recipe on Pinterest, but altered it slightly.  Here's my version:

HOMEMADE LIP BALM

2 Tbsp beeswax granules

6 Tbsp organic shea butter

2 Tbsp organic coconut oil

15 drops of lavender or peppermint essential oil

Bascially, all you do is put all the ingredients in a double boiler, or in my case, a glass bowl on top of a small saucepan, and melt it all together.  When it is completely liquified, use a small measuring cup with a spout to pour into small tins or empty lip balm tubes. If using the tubes, this little funnel comes in handy.  Let cool overnight, then put the lids on and you've got your lips covered!  This is what they looked like while they were cooling.

On my first batch, I tried adding some vanilla extract to make a kind of lavender/vanilla scent, but the vanilla didn't really dissolve into the mixture and it ended up staying at the bottom of the bowl, so my last  tin was basically all vanilla -- had to throw that one away.  Just stick with good quality, food-grade essential oils and you should be fine. If you don't want any scent, just leave that part out.  The peppermint is nice because it gives your lips a bit of a tingle when you apply it.

I guess if you are really crafty, you could make a cute label to put on your tubes and tins.  Mine are just plain, but they work just as well.  :)

I spent $46 to buy the supplies I needed to make this lip balm.  I already had the coconut oil and essential oils on hand.  So for less than $50, I made 25 tubes and 10 tins -- enough lip balm to last me, my friends, my kids, my sister, and everyone else I'm willing to share with a really long time!
