As many of you know, I'm currently working on my second book. It's called "Famished! 52 Ingredients Your Body is Really Starving For." (working title) Most of the things our bodies are starving for have little or nothing to do with food, and this is exactly what my book is about. I'd love to share an excerpt of it with you, and as always, I welcome any feedback or comments!
INGREDIENT #21: BREATH
Breathing is so vital to life that we can’t go more than a few seconds without it. Breath is literally life. Yet so often, we neglect to think about how important our breath is to our wellbeing. How often are we concentrating so hard and trying so diligently that we just forget to breathe? I know I have caught myself on several occasions – just holding my breath and waiting for the moment or pain to pass.
When we hold our breath, we are stopping, or at least attempting to stop, whatever is happening. When we let go and just breathe, we are allowing and making space for life to unfold. We run around making things happen all day long, but how often do we just sit down, take in a deep breath, and relax into the moment? How many times a day would a good cleansing breath help us become more focused, more aware, and more at ease?
For many years, I felt like I had to earn my existence on this earth. I thought I should always be busy, have a million and one things to do, take care of everyone and everything, never stopping or slowing down. But years of panic attacks, anxiety, and stress related health problems eventually proved to me that I was dead wrong. My worth does not depend on how busy I am, or how many tasks I can accomplish in a day. I am worth something even if I don’t get one single thing done today. It took me a long time to figure that out.
You are of value because you exist. You are here. You are alive. You are breathing in and out. And even if that were all you were able to do for the rest of your life, just breathe in and out, you would still be of infinite worth and value. It’s good to have goals, dreams, aspirations, and plans. It’s also good to have time to stop, listen, think, and breathe. Life is a journey, not a race. Whether we arrive at our final destination panting and out of breath or in a calm, relaxed state of mind is entirely up to us.
Take a deep breath. Hold it for a few seconds. Now let it out. Do that a few more times. Close your eyes and feel the breath entering and exiting your body. Relax. Breathe. You deserve it.
